The Benefits of Having a GSA
Written by Jessie and Magdalena
In a school environment; and especially as an LGBTQ+ student, it can be incredibly difficult to find a safe space, community, or loving and welcoming environment. As a student in any type of minority group, it is extremely important to find a body of like-minded and supportive individuals. Unfortunately, however, it can be just as difficult. If they aren't given a community that they know they can go to, students will often remain feeling alone. Having a group where students can support each other, find people who are like them, and share feelings and emotions that may not be ordinarily talked about, can make students feel far less alone. In a community such as this, students can connect and build friendships with people who are like them, and who will appreciate the parts of them that they might not know how to express. A GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) club could do just this. Not only would it be beneficial to people in the community, but also supporters of the community who lack education on such matters.
